Scientist, Biology

Full-Time Position

San Diego, CA


Plex Pharmaceuticals (www.plexpharma.com), a small biotechnology company which is developing novel protein folding drugs, has an opening for a full-time Scientist.

The successful candidate will contribute to drug discovery efforts by performing compound screening in biochemical, cell-based, and ex vivo assays, as well as assisting in assay development for further characterization of compounds. Under supervision the Scientist will:

  • Perform enzyme assays, binding assays, reporter assays, SDS-PAGE protein electrophoresis, Western blot analysis, and ELISAs

  • Use appropriate cellular models for neurodegenerative and other diseases for assaying cell death, gene expression, protein aggregation and other biomarker assays

  • Develop and troubleshoot new biochemical and cell-based assays

  • Identify and develop strategies to contribute to drug discovery projects and grant applications

  • Support day-to-day needs of the lab and company

Education Qualification and Experience:

  • PhD in biology, neuroscience or related field with 1-3 years industry experience

  • Demonstrated proficiency in protein biochemistry

  • Experience in cell culture and cell-based assays. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in models of protein misfolding

  • Must be eager to learn and take initiative on new projects

  • Knowledgeable with a broad range of laboratory equipment

  • Experience in Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office applications is required

  • Experience and knowledge in use of GraphPad Prism software

  • Sound critical thinking capabilities, with the ability to work independently to plan experiments, interpret and analyze data

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail

  • Good oral and written communication skills

  • Willingness to work in a dynamic, challenging and fast paced environment

Scientist, Formulation

Full-Time Position

San Diego, CA

 

Plex Pharmaceuticals (www.plexpharma.com), a small biotechnology company which is developing novel protein folding drugs, has an opening for a full-time Scientist.

The successful candidate will contribute to drug development efforts by generating novel formulations of drug candidates for topical delivery using state of the art delivery technologies to achieve enhanced and sustained release of the APIs. Under the supervision of the Associate Director, the Scientist will:

  • Design, develop and formulate APIs to meet pre-determined goals.

  • Develop formula prototypes, batch IDs, and coordinate end products for lab analysis

  • Ensure adherence and compliance to FDA cGMPs and other global regulations for transdermal topical delivery of APIs

  • Collaborate with team members, external CROs and management to achieve company goals and objectives

  • Create new topical delivery technologies and lead establishment of product specifications in support of product development and competitiveness and regulatory compliance

  • Establish and refine processes that will speed the product development process and provide continuous improvement to product quality for effective and enhanced transdermal drug delivery

  • Create and maintain documentation to support product efficacy, dosage and safety rationales and product claims development using the latest up to date scientific and technical information

  • Research equipment for use in the laboratory, analyze data, interact with medicinal chemistry department to facilitate formulation and delivery technologies

  • Report data, progress, and/or issues on a timely basis

  • Plan and schedule project tasks related to laboratory experiments and external CRO for in vivo efficacy studies

  • Support day-to-day needs of the lab and company

Education Qualification and Experience:

  • MS in Pharmaceutical Sciences or related field. PhD degree preferred

  • 3-5 years hands on experience in topical drug delivery environment having led projects from concept to completion

  • Experience with formulating synthetically developed drug products using state of the art delivery technologies

  • Comfortable working in a start-up environment

  • Highly entrepreneurial; demonstrated ability to create novel topical drug delivery methodologies, SOPs and technology development

  • Must be eager to learn and take initiative on new projects

  • Knowledgeable with a broad range of laboratory equipment

Senior Research Associate, Medicinal Chemistry

Full-Time Position

San Diego, CA

 

Plex Pharmaceuticals (www.plexpharma.com), a small biotechnology company is developing novel protein folding drugs, has an opening for a full-time Senior Research Associate, Medicinal Chemistry. 

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SKILLS:

  • Independently plan and execute multi-step synthetic sequences toward key target molecules, using appropriate purification and compound characterization techniques

  • Apply independent thinking to resolve synthetic and chemical biology challenges

  • Recommend alternatives, research new methods and techniques and proactively seek out others to discuss potential solutions to problems

  • Maintain a high level of scientific integrity and laboratory safety

  • Conduct independent scientific literature and patent searches using relevant databases

  • Plan and select appropriate methods and techniques for performing experiments

  • Assist with the management of CROs for chemistry, ADME/PK, and other drug discovery studies

  • Provide formulation support for in-vitro and in-vivo early discovery studies

  • Demonstrate good verbal communication and interpersonal skills

REQUIREMENTS

  • BS with 5+ years of experience or MS degree in Organic Chemistry with 3+ years of relevant industrial experience with synthetic organic chemistry

  • Experience planning and executing multi-step synthetic sequences on small and large scale

  • Experience with cutting-edge organic and medicinal chemistry principles and techniques, including synthetic methods, SAR development, and multi-parameter lead optimization

  • Familiarity with modern chromatographic and analytical techniques, including flash chromatography, HPLC, LCMS and NMR

  • General understanding of biological assays and principles of PK/ADME

  • Experience with chemistry software and databases such as Chemdraw and SciFinder

  • Good oral and written communication skills
